Freshwater Road

Set in 1964 against the backdrop of the Civil Rights Movement, Freshwater Road is a coming-of-age story tracing the evolution of Celeste Tyree, an idealistic, privileged middle class black college student to a battle-tested civil rights activist during a tumultuous summer as a voter registration volunteer in Mississippi. As the summer unfolds, Celestes journey becomes as much about validating her identity as a black woman as it is a journey to combat civic and social oppression. By standing shoulder to shoulder with the people of Pineyville in their quest for human and civil rights, Celeste learns about courage, compassion and the strength of her own character.
