Music, money and murder collide with the dreams and ambitions of three gifted and talented teens as they skyrocket from the church choir to the top of the Billboard charts. Fortified by their faith and guided by the uncanny “Second Sight” that runs in their family, the girls are suddenly thrust into the ferocious spotlight of instant fame. Now, they’re catapulted into a glamorous but dark world where danger lurks, hearts are broken, and lives are shattered. It’s “A Star is Born” times three and “Dreamgirls” for the new millennials.
FLASHBACK: Twenty years earlier – On the eve of their national tour and a recording deal, rising young R&B stars Rachel and Ruth Owens and their stage mother, Phoebe, are entangled in the brutal murder of young Irish mobster Timothy O’Malley, whose illicit romance with Ruth turns violent and deadly. To avoid being implicated in the crime, they orchestrate a massive cover-up.
THE PRESENT: Twenty years later, Rachel, having abandoned a promising singing career for the starring role of First Lady of Greater Bethel Baptist Church, is married to a dynamic minister, Solomon Pickens. Their offspring include an estranged son, Joshua, and three singing teenage daughters, Abby, Chloe and Zina. Fame and fortune come calling early one Sunday morning when our three sisters overwhelm the congregation with a powerful performance. Driven to their feet, the congregation’s shouts of “Hallelujah! Hallelujah Sisters!” ring throughout the church. The video instantly goes viral and the name sticks. A musical legend is born.
But there’s trouble stalking the Pickens family as a ticking time bomb is secretly placed in the church annex. As Chloe and Zina argue about an anonymous threatening note left in one of the choir robes, Abby confides in her grandmother Phoebe that she’s troubled by a recurring psychic dream that warns of dangerous times ahead. That same morning, their older brother, Joshua, returns from a mysterious two-year absence after hatching an embezzlement scheme which swindled money from the struggling congregation and threatened the church’s future.
Joshua’s return triggers the attention of notorious lady mobster Grace O’Malley and her nephew Kayne, who’s a dead-ringer for Grace’s brother, Timothy, who was murdered twenty years earlier. The past comes back to haunt The Hallelujah Sisters as danger explodes, rocking the very foundation of the family’s core, jeopardizing their perilous journey to fame and fortune.
